WHAT IS PEP?

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), is a medicine you take for 28 days that can prevent HIV after you have been exposed. PEP must be started within 72 hours of exposure for it to work. Timing is key for PEP — the sooner you take it, the better.

IF YOU’VE HAD A POSSIBLE EXPOSURE TO HIV, YOU COULD BE ELIGIBLE FOR PEP.

Possible exposures include:

a broken condom

Having condomless sex or having a condom break during sex with a partner who is living with HIV, or with a partner whose HIV status is unknown

two heads with a straight face looking at a syringe

Sharing equipment for injection drug use (needles, syringes, cookers for example)

two heads with a straight face looking at a syringe

Sharing needles or syringes for hormone therapy

a broken heart

Sexual assault

a droplet of a fluid

Other contact through one’s eye, vagina, rectum, other mucous membranes or non-intact skin with bodily fluids (blood, semen, vaginal or rectal secretions, from an individual living with HIV or with an unknown HIV status)

two hands shaking

If you think you were exposed to HIV at your workplace, contact your supervisor or human resources department, or go to the nearest emergency department for PEP care.
