PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication that helps prevent HIV. It comes as a daily pill or a long-acting injectable. When taken as prescribed, PrEP is up to 99% effective at preventing HIV.
There’s more than one way to take PrEP. A provider can help you choose what works best for your body and your life.
PrEP is safe and has minimal side effects for most people. If you do have side effects, your provider will work with you to adjust or change options.

Many people use PrEP alongside other options, depending on what they need:

No. Most visits are done by phone or video. You only need to come in if you choose injectable PrEP or prefer in-person care or labs.
Many people can start PrEP the same day, especially with the daily pill option. If you’re interested in injectables, we’ll walk you through what’s needed and help you get set up as quickly as possible.
Labs usually include an HIV test, STI testing, and a kidney function test. Your provider will explain other labs you need based on your choice of PrEP. Getting labs regularly is an important part of your PrEP care.
Depending on insurance status there are options including home test kits, our clinic, or a local Labcorp or Quest. We will help you navigate the best option and walk you through what to expect.
PrEP care is covered at little or no cost for most people. Our team is here to help you get PrEP at an affordable rate by navigating costs and working to find coverage. If you receive an auto-generated bill for telehealth visits or labs, send it to us right away before paying.
You can get PrEP with or without insurance. Our navigators can help enroll you in coverage or patient assistance programs so you can still get PrEP.
You will work with a care team that includes doctors from Jefferson Einstein, nurses, and patient navigators. Navigators help with scheduling, insurance, labs, pharmacy issues, and general questions.
Most people have few or no side effects. Some people who take pills report having nausea for a few days that resolves, and people who get injectables report some discomfort at the site of the injection. If something doesn’t feel right, tell us. Your provider can help adjust your care or explore other PrEP options.
Follow-ups depend on the type of PrEP you choose. Oral PrEP requires visits every 3 months, and visits can be virtual. Injectable PrEP requires in-person visits every 2 or 6 months, depending on the type of PrEP you take.
All types of PrEP prescriptions require regularly scheduled HIV testing before your next visit. We will remind you about your appointments and help you stay on track.
TelePrEP is designed to fit around your schedule. Most visits happen by phone or video, and our team can help find appointment times that work for you, including outside traditional work hours. For example, we offer evening and Saturday telehealth appointments every month.
TelePrEP visits are quick. A new appointment takes usually 20 minutes, and a follow-up can be 10 minutes or less.
First appointments are virtual, and so are follow-ups if you take oral PrEP. That means you can take the appointment from a quiet, private place that works best for you.
If you take injectable PrEP, follow-ups will be in-person and you can select an appointment that fits your schedule.
Our navigators are here to help you coordinate both your PrEP visits and your lab work to help you not have to take time off work.
Life happens. We will reach out with reminders and give you time to reschedule. If you miss multiple visits without checking in, refills may pause until you reconnect with us.
Yes, some people stop PrEP or change which type of PrEP is best for them. Talk with your provider before stopping PrEP so they can help you do it safely.
